Thoreau built a cabin at Walden Pond and lived there for two years, and the book is his account of it. The famous parts are about simplicity and living deliberately, but the quieter pleasure of it is the noticing: how ice forms and goes, what the birds are doing, how sound carries across water in different seasons.
It rewards being read in small pieces, outdoors if you can manage it. Not every chapter will hold you, and that is fine - it was never meant to be finished in a sitting.
