Counselling is not a registered profession in Australia, so the title "counsellor" is not protected by law. Training ranges from a diploma to a master's degree. The Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) keep registers of members who meet their standards for training, supervision and ethics.
Groundpath checks each counsellor's qualification certificate before listing them, and shows ACA or PACFA membership on their profile where they have it.
Counselling is not covered by Medicare. Some private health funds pay a rebate for sessions with an ACA or PACFA registered counsellor under extras cover, so it is worth asking your fund. Each counsellor sets their own fee, and it is shown before you book.
